Defining Talent Management

ASTD's Talent Management Model

ASTD's Talent Management Model

I noticed an article in the May 2009 T+D by Andrew Paradise which defined Talent Management. Talent Management is one of the 9 Areas of Expertise (AoE) in ASTD’s Learning & Performance Competency model. Since I’m reading the May issue of T+D in August, I suspect that a few of my readers might also have missed this information. For those of you who haven’t seen that definition yet, here it is:

A holistic approach to optimizing human capital, which enables an organization to drive short- and long-term results by building culture, engagement, capability, and capacity through integrated talent acquisition, development, and deployment processes that are aligned to business goals.

There is a related page on the official ASTD Blog, “How Do You Define Talent Management” by the ASTD research department. This article refers to the following white paper: The New Face of Talent Management (Galagan, 2009). This white paper should be on any CPLP candidate’s reading list. In addition to creating a standard definition of Talent Management, this paper covers success factors, essential skills for leaders of talent management, various leadership roles, and an action plan for leading Talent Management.
